The project will also research the
original excavation records of part of the street, many of which may be
found in the archives of the Soprintendenza.
Vittorio
Spinazzola, Soprintendente of Pompei between 1910 and 1923, supervised
the excavation, reconstruction and recording of almost 400 meters of
the Via dell'Abbondanza during his tenure. The work was published in
1953 as Pompei alla luce degli Scavi Nuovi di Via dellAbbondanza (anni 1910-1923).
This three-volume monograph documents the buildings and their frontages
along the street, and shows excavation photographs, orthographic drawings
of each block, and watercolors and charcoal drawings that propose
reconstructions of the original structures. It also provides a unique
look at the excavation and recording methods that were used by
archaeologists in the early twentieth century. The watercolors and
drawings produced by Alberto Sanarica for Spinazzola will be compared
with the current orthographic photomosaics. This study will reveal any
changes that may have occurred since the original excavations. Comparisons
of the different recording methods will also be made.
